FORGERY

A recent article appeared in The Times (17th November 2005) regarding an apparent forgery of a Peter Howson oil painting. Peter spotted the painting in a catalogue for a forthcoming Christies auction and the painting was duly removed from the sale. Although this type of event is VERY rare we do appreciate that some secondary market Howson paintings can appear for sale in other galleries around the UK and on auction websites such as ebay. If you are considering buying a Howson work from other sources we would urge you to make sure that the seller can guarantee the provenance of the work.

As one of the largest dealers in original Howson work, we can assure all our customers, and future customers, that our Howson work is 100% guaranteed. All our Howson paintings and pastels are sold with a certificate of authenticity.

HOWSON RECORD BREAKER

Phil Miller - Arts Correspondent - The Herald
ONE of Scotland's leading artists is celebrating a record price for his work which he hopes could herald his breakthrough into the American market.

In one of his greatest coups, Glasgow-based Peter Howson's Sisters of Mercy sold for £103,910 ($186,000) at Christie's in New York. The painting – sold by one private collector to another – had adorned the cover of an album by the American band Live, and marks a new high for Howson's commercial power.
He is now hoping it will signal a major move into the US market.

Sisters of Mercy beat its reserve price by around £40,000. Howson's previous record was £64,500, fetched at a Sotheby's sale at Gleneagles in September last year for another oil on canvas, The Age of Apathy.

Sisters of Mercy fetched the third highest price in the New York sale, alongside works by leading artists including Jackson Pollock and David Hockney, whose Zanzibar with Postcards and Kiosk sold for £113,966.

The Pennsylvania-based rock band Live used Howson's image as the cover for their most successful album, Throwing Copper in 1994. It sold more than six million copies in the US, although they are not as well-known in Britain.
Robert Manley, vice-president of Christie's in New York, said: "The connection with the rock band may have raised its profile to collectors."

Howson said yesterday: "I have never really been in the American market before, that's the first time really on that scale . . . I am delighted, it really moves my work into a different market, a different sphere. I first heard about it today and I am quite surprised and humbled."

The painting, completed in 1989, was shown in a retrospective of his work in Glasgow in 1993.
